What I hope Project RENEW will be able to communicate to beginning teachers.

  • Students learn mathematics best when they’re interested in the problems that they are working on.

  • It helps when new information is presented in the context of something already understood. Otherwise it is more difficult for the learner and can sometimes cause harm by creating learning distress.

  • The main impediment to children’s learning of mathematics is the undermining of their confidence in their intelligence to think mathematically that happens during the well meaning, but misguided, attempt to tell them how to do mathematics.

  • The repression of natural physiological processes (crying, shaking, laughing, yawning, tantruming and talking) that help people recover from learning distress, is a major obstacle to students’ understanding of mathematics.
