Working Together to do Mathematics

What do you never want to hear or have someone do? What would you consider encouraging?

Encourage

Never Hear or Do

  • Draw everyone in the group in.
  • Blurt out an answer.
  • Asking for a clue.
  • "That won’t work!"
  • Guiding Questions
  • "Oh, that was easy."
  • "What was your thinking here?"
  • "That’s not right."
  • Continue investigating and looking for other approaches.
  • Grab or control the manipulatives.
  • "That’s a good idea."
  • "This is stupid."
  • Positive statements.
  • Don’t like to be rushed!
  • Giving everyone an equal opportunity for input.

  • Clarifying questions.

  • "I’m not sure how you got that."

  • "Are you sure? How do you know?"
